Public Speaking

Public speaking is the ability to stand up in front of an audience and deliver a compelling speech. There are many different audiences and opportunities in a lifetime which require a speech to be given and public speaking ensures that these can be met.

How will it work?
Each week a different topic will be presented ranging from historical speakers to rhetorical techniques. The students will be expected to undertake exercises to consolidate and make clear what they are learning. The sessions will last around 60-90mins.At the end of the semester students will be expected to put into practice the different skills they have learnt by presenting on a topic to their peers.

Why join OCSEP public speaking?
Public speaking has certain overlaps with debating as both require confidence and coherent arguments. However, there are distinct differences between the use of rhetoric in a speech and the more formulaic logic required in a debate. The ability to persuade, to arouse a response, to make clear and to entertain through the power of words turns an average student or worker into a great one.
